Land of lakes and northern lights

Travel to Finland

Finland offers a quieter, slower kind of travel from design-led cities like Helsinki to snow-covered forests in Lapland and endless lakes in the summer. Here you’ll find my Finland travel guides, itineraries and planning tips.

Best Time to Visit

It really depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for. Winter (December to March) is ideal for snow, northern lights and Lapland experiences, while summer (June to August) brings long daylight hours, lake regions and a completely different side of the country.

How Long to Visit

Around 6–10 days works well if you want to combine Helsinki with Lapland or another region. Finland isn’t about rushing through multiple cities, it’s about experiencing fewer places more slowly.

Getting Around

Trains connect major cities well, and domestic flights are useful if you’re heading up to Lapland. Once you’re there, experiences are often organised locally.

Cash vs Cards

Finland is almost entirely cashless. Cards work everywhere, even for very small purchases.

Must-Try Experience

A traditional Finnish sauna followed by stepping out into the cold, it sounds intense, but it’s one of the most memorable parts of the experience.

FAQ

Where can you see the northern lights in Finland?

Lapland is the best region for northern lights in Finland, especially around Rovaniemi and smaller towns further north. You’ll need clear skies and a bit of patience, but staying for a few nights improves your chances.

Is Finland a good destination in winter?

Yes, especially if you’re looking for a proper winter experience. Snow, frozen landscapes, saunas and northern lights make it very different from most European trips.

What is a good Finland itinerary for first-time visitors?

A simple and well-balanced itinerary would include Helsinki and a few days in Lapland. This gives you a mix of city life and winter or nature-based experiences.

Is Finland expensive to travel to?

Yes, Finland is on the expensive side, especially in Lapland. However, planning your stay and experiences in advance can help manage costs better. For a realistic estimate of how much it costs to travel to Bhutan, you can check my travel cost calculator here: https://budgettrip.guidesbykhyatimaloo.com/
